I’m Your Sugar Donut

by Justin Larson

Our romance was fresh and hot

On a cool summer morning

At World’s Best Donuts

In Grand Marais.

We’d just gotten out for a walk and

I was already sprinkled all over you—

The little flecks of granulated sugar in

Your knotted clumps of hair

Your knitted sweater

Your pants and shirt.

You wore me with such joy

Child-like and giddy with

Chewy, doughy goodness and

Sweetness on your tongue

Strolling the waterfront together

With what was left of me in your hand

Flashing playful, mischievous glances

As you bit away what was left of my crust.
