Inukshuk

by Justin Larson

Today

I’ll begin removing the stones

Deconstructing what I mistook as you

Hewed from my own hand

Erected on the shore

To guide me back

From the steel blue

The white fangs

The breaking wave

Where I‘ve laid now

40 days long and counting

Wrecked at your feet

Beneath an icy stare

Unflagging and unfeeling

Cold to the touch

Hardened to the weather,

Wind and season.

Tomorrow

I’ll pick it all up

Resurrect you one granite block at a time

Amid a ritual fire dance with flaming

Embers whirling skyward among

Shooting stars and northern lights

You’ll be born perfect again

Oh Eidolon of welcoming eyes

Of flesh and spirit

So just for one moment more

In my self-flagellation

I can convince myself

In your numbness and indifference

You do love me

Until your “there is no future here”

Sends me fleeing to the sea again

A fool.
