The Carousel Ride

by Justin Larson

Round and round we go

Counterclockwise, in reverse—

Chasing each other in

Never ending pursuit

On our jeweled ponies

In a spectacle of flashing lights

Up and down, down, down

Then up and over again

Spinning dizzily over the same ground

As everyone points and stares.

Our laughter through waning smiles

Winds down and portentously out of tune

With the wheezing organ with

Torn bellows and a

Glockenspiel that bangs my ears.

I take firm hold of the reigns

Knowing for sure this time

That when the music ends

I will gallop away.

I will.
